Hot cocoa, snowy Winter Wonderlands, and cozy blankets are some things I love about winter. It may be cold outside, but that's where the fun layering comes in with cardigans, scarves, and more!

However, when it comes to taking photos -- which can happen outside more often than not -- it is important to stay warm! Continue reading to get some ideas on how to do that while making sure your family stays coordinated with each other!

Color Schemes

Since Winter is just after Fall, the color schemes can be quite similar. Some good basics are:

  • Monochromatic Neutrals - black, grey, white

  • Holiday Colors - green, red, royal blue, gold

  • Pastels - colors with a "dusty" shade like mauve, lavender, Barn red

Patterns

While staying within those color schemes, you can have fun playing with different patterns and textures to add another element to your outfits. Here's some ideas:

  • Plaids

  • Faux Furs

  • Knitted sweaters/wool

Another unique idea is to incorporate the same subject that's prominent in everyone's outfit. For example, you have a family of four and you wanted to choose snowflakes as your primary 'shared' item. Necklaces and earrings from Mom could tie into Dad's snowflake tie. And the kids could have a sweater with snowflakes on it or a tutu with a snowy design.

How to Stay Warm, but Not Look Frumpy

Winter photo sessions usually take place outside after it has snowed. It's always so beautiful! However, with snow means much lower temperatures in weather. That's why you want to make sure you layer your clothing well to stay warm and safe, but you don't want to overdo it and lose the shape of your body. Some ways to help with that are:

  • Have 'hidden layers' that are underneath the clothes you want seen in your photos that are thinner to help alleviate the bulkiness

  • Don't be afraid to bring along some blankets to wrap yourself or kiddos in when moving to the next photo location or for a quick warm-up

  • Hand or body warmers to stick into pockets, socks, or gloves can also help keep you toasty! Just make sure you're using them properly (always read the instructions on the box)

  • Winter Photos are a great way to accessorize! Hats, scarves, gloves, boots, etc.! This is where you can go a little 'crazy' with accessorizing!

Remember, I want you to be warm - not just cute! So layer with thinner hidden layers and only go bulky for the visible ones. And stick to an overall theme for everyone in the photo!
